Skilled Hands When You Need It

What is “Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery (OMFS)”?

It is the surgical management of conditions involving the mouth, teeth, and jaws. A specialist OMFS performs a large range of procedures ranging from:

the removal of wisdom teeth, to dental implant placement, and the treatment of pathology of the face and oral cavity. In addition, we are involved in the correction of facial deformities and the surgical repair of facial fractures following sports injuries, assaults, or motor vehicle accidents.

About the Surgeon

Recognized both nationally and internationally - Dr. Anthony Oliver completed his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery training in the United States of America at the highly acclaimed University of Texas Health Science Centre in Houston – including a six (6) month rotation to the University of Aarhus, Denmark – where he was involved in the surgical correction of craniofacial deformities including cleft lip and palate surgery.

Prior to this he obtained a Masters Degree, by both thesis and examination, in Oral Medicine and Oral Pathology – at the University of Melbourne. As such, he brings a vast reserve of experience to meet both the surgical and non-surgical needs of patients with problems of the oral and maxillofacial region.

His particular interests include: dental implantology and bone grafting, post-traumatic facial reconstruction and orthognathic surgery to correct dentofacial deformities. He has over 20 years of clinical and research experience and has published widely in both national and international journals over a broad range of topics, including: oral cancer, facial trauma, dental implants, and bone grafting.

Dr. Oliver was a member of the Advanced Facial Trauma faculty at the AO-ASIF course held in Davos, Switzerland recently and is a past member of the Committee for Continuing Education of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons. He is involved as a Mentor in the Postgraduate Implant Training program at the University of Sydney and holds appointments as Senior Lecturer, Faculty of Health Sciences/Department of Surgery, at both the University of Queensland and James Cook University. In spite of his busy clinical case load, he maintains an active interest in both research and teaching.

He was the recipient of the International Association for Dental Research Postgraduate Division Award during his Masters Degree at the University of Melbourne and won the Travelling Scholarship of the International Association of Oral Pathologists which allowed him to attend the University of Southern California for a six week sabbatical before commencing his Oral and Maxillofacial Surgical Residency in Texas. Further, he won the Postgraduate Division of the Research Presentation Day at the University of Texas Health Science Centre in Houston – for his work on Epidermal Growth Factor as a Marker in Salivary Gland Malignancy.

Finally, he was awarded the prestigious Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons Medal for the Best Result in the Final Examination in the field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. This is the highest award offered by the College in the Field of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery and represents the height of academic excellence.

For the last 4 years he has held the position of Senior Consultant at the University Hospital, Esbjerg in Denmark where he was engaged in the teaching of trainees, research, and the surgical roster of the Department.

Anthony has now returned to Australia and brings back with him vast training, experience and knowledge from three continents to provide service to the patients of the Illawarra, South Coast of New South Wales, Sydney, and North Queensland.
